Vale Mike Drayson

Mike Drayson, well known voice over artist and announcer, has died aged 71. Mike was recognised as one of the best voices in the country. His voice was heard at 3XY/2SM/ 7EX/EON FM/3SH and recently Northside Radio Sydney. He was also the original station voice of 106.9 QFM Ipswich. Mike started his career at 3SH Swan Hill in 1970 after attending the Lee Murray radio school.

Glenn Driscoll says: “I am deeply saddened by this news! Mike was a most important part of my radio career. I always wanted to work at 3XY when I was working in country radio. I sent an audition tape to 3XY addressed to Mike, who I believe was PD at the time. I didn’t really expect him to reply but he did. He mentored me for the next few months and I sent weekly air checks to him and Mike gave me tips which of course I used on air. Then one day out of the blue Mike rang me and said what are doing next week, I said I have nothing planned. Mike replied…Good!! Because your coming to Sydney to work with me at 2SM!! It was a shock, never even contemplated going to Sydney as I really wanted 3XY, as I was a Melbourne boy. Anyway I went to 2SM and worked with some of the best radio talent and enjoyed every minute thanks to my friend Mike Drayson. A year or so later after Mike had left and Ron E Sparx was P.D. I eventually was given a gig at 3XY. Mike was a wonderful human, very scary at times when he rang on the hotline but underneath that gruff facade Mike was a real softee….so sad today, condolences to his beautiful family, thanks Mike, Gunna miss ya brother…..rest easy old friend.”

John Ogier says: “Sad news indeed. I always enjoyed chatting with Mick on our Sunday handovers. His dry wit, professionalism and wonderful resonate voice has been inspiring. And what a great selection of music on Mick’s Old Skool Cool. Vale, Mick.”

Leigh Drew recalls: “I gave Mike his first job in Radio at 3SH. A wonderful voice, sadly battled ill health in recent times. Condolence to Leana , Zac and family. RIP.”

John Scott says: “This is such sad news ….. I used to listen to Mike on 2SM in the late 70’s. He had such a great voice.”

Gary Roberts says: “Mike and I both worked on air at 5AD over 5 decades ago. He was by far the best voice and a fabulous guy. RIP Mike Drayson.”
