Gordon O’Byrne, well known Perth radio personality has died. ‘Googy’ had just turned 74 on February 1. He worked at Perth stations 6PR, 6PM, 6IX, 6KY and 96FM. He was actually the first live jock on 96FM when it went to air on the 8th August 1980. In his later years he also worked on Coast FM Mandurah as well as Curtin Radio. Outside of WA he also had a successful stint on 2SM Sydney in the 1970s. (Information courtesy of Chris Isley).

Not only is Kevin Hillier looking for his recently stolen Twelfth Man gold album and 1977 King of Pop award, he is also looking for his next radio job.A house burglary saw Hillier’s gold album, presented for his contribution to the success of Billy Birmingham’s first 12th Man record and his King of Pop statue for Most Popular DJ Queensland, stolen.
I met Gordon when I was 17 and an aspiring jock in Perth and both Claremont supporters. We have been friends since then and worked together at 2SM in Sydney as well. We kept in touch. I spoke to him on his bthday on February first and it was the same ole Googy. Full of laughs. I might add he was the best disc jockey I have ever heard and admired his talent greatly. Goodbye my friend.
What a legend, my memories of Gordon was hosting the request midday shift on 2SM in the 70’s… he filled my day with joy….RIP
I remember him when he did the late afternoon (drive) program on 2UW in 1979-1980, he lasted approximately 10 months with the station.
